Question

The camera cannot take a picture (no shutter release).

Answer

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot this issue:

Important: If an error message or icon is displayed in relation to this issue, refer to the instruction manual of the camera for model-specific information.

  1. Ensure the inserted battery is fully-charged.
  2. If the recording media has a write-protect or lock switch, set it to the OFF or UNLOCK position.
  3. Ensure the recording media is properly inserted in the camera.
  4. Ensure the camera is powered on.
  5. Try taking a picture.

Note:

  • When the camera is set to use auto focus, it will not take a picture until the subject is in focus. Pressing and holding the shutter button down halfway allows the camera to focus automatically. A flashing, green indicator will be visible in the viewfinder while the camera is focusing - it will stop flashing when the subject is in focus. After the green indicator has stopped flashing you can press the shutter button all the way down to take the picture.
  • If you set Priority setup in the menu to Release, you can force the shutter button to take a picture without autofocusing. However, if you change scene modes on the mode dial or turn off the power, the camera will default back to the previous auto focus mode. Thus, you need to select Release each time you change to a different scene mode or power the camera off and on.
  • If attaching the camera body to an astronomical telescope or other similar device, (depending on your camera model) it will be necessary to do one of the following:

    - Set the mode dial to Manual (M).
    - Set the Release w/oLens option in the camera menu to Enable.
    - Set the Shutter lock option in the camera menu to Off: no lens.
