What does this do?
This utility upgrades the Blu-ray Disc player firmware to Version M04.R.789 and provides the following benefits:
- Resolves SSL security issue.
Benefits provided by previous upgrades and included in version M04.R789:
- Improves BD-ROM playability.
- Improves YouTube connectivity.
- Adds the ability to play 1080/60p/50p video files produced by Cyber-shot and Handycam video.
- Improves HDMI connectivity.
- Resolves an uncommon issue where the Blu-ray Disc player connects to the Internet even when setting Do not allow internet connection.
- Improvement of playback issue of some discs after firmware upgrade in Asia.
- Resolves an uncommon issue where the xross media bar language may switch to English after the Blu-ray Disc player starts up.
- BD-ROM playability improvement.
- HDMI connectivity improvement.
- Improves compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
- Improves the display of character for DLNA.
- BD player becomes to be able to display file name and folder name.
- Improves connectivity for Internet Video.

Check the Current Firmware Version
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
- If the player starts to play a disc, press the STOP button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
- Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup – System Settings, and then press the ENTER button.
- Use the arrow keys to select Quick Start Mode and make sure that the Quick Start Mode is set to Off.
If the Quick Start Mode is set to On, change the setting to Off. Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed. - Use the arrow keys to select System Information, and then press the ENTER button.
- The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc player will be listed on the television screen.
Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 789 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.
Before getting started:
There are two ways to perform the Firmware upgrade:
- Network Upgrade:
The Network Upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Upgrade method.
You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable. Please see the Network Upgrade Instructions section below, for more information. - Create an Upgrade Disc:
If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
Please see the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section, for more information. A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the upgrade disc.
The Network Upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Upgrade method to upgrade the firmware.
Important:
- WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
- In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
The firmware update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD player is connected.
- Connect the LAN(100) terminal on the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
- If there is a disc in the Blu-ray Disc player, please remove the disc.
- At the xrossmediabar (XMB) , use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - Network Update and then press the ENTER button.
- Perform version upgrade? message is displayed.
- Select OK and then press the ENTER button.
- Download process starts and download screen is displayed.
- During the download the message DL */9 (* changes from 0 to 9, indicating progress) is displayed on TV screen.
- After download process, the upgrade starts and VUP appears on the player front panel display.
- While the upgrade is installed the message VUP */9 is displayed on the player front display.
Note: The * changes to 0 through 9, indicating the upgrade progress. - The firmware upgrade is complete when FINISH appears on the player front panel display.
WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair. - The Blu-ray Disc player will automatically power off.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc player
- Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 789, the firmware upgrade was successful.
Possible Issues related to the Network Upgrade
- SYS ERR or VUP NG is displayed on the player front panel display.
1. Push and hold the POWER button for several seconds until the unit power is off.
2. Turn on the power of the Blu-ray Disc player.
3. Please execute Network Upgrade Procedure again.
4. If the symptom does not improve after upgrade again, please contact Sony. - When running network upgrade, the television shows Connection status cannot be confirmed and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade.
There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
1. Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the LAN(100) terminal on the player and to the Internet source.
2. Check the Blu-ray Disc player network settings and confirm that the player has its own IP address.
Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the Proxy Server input field.
3. Follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again. - The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
Power on the player again. and then follow the Network Upgrade Instructions again. - The network upgrade process has two parts, first the download and then the upgrade. If, after the download part is finished, the firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running after more than 30 minutes.

Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc
If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
If you sucessfully updated your Blu-ray Disc player using the Network upgrade in the section above, you don't need to apply this procedure.
Important Notes:
- If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Blu-ray Disc player.
- IMPORTANT: At this time, not all versions of CD burning software are able to create an upgrade disc. If you have difficulty creating a disc, please consider using the network upgrade methodn or requesting a disc. You may also opt to check back later to see if a newer version of the firmware upgrade has become available.
- WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- Use a brand new CD-R disc to burn the firmware upgrade. The player may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
Note: A CD-R disc is strongly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc. - Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:
Macintosh® OS X v10.10, Macintosh® OS X v10.9, Macintosh® OS X v10.8, Macintosh® OS X v10.7 or Macintosh® OS X v10.6 is recommended. - A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the upgrade disc.
- After you create the disc, please see the Disc Upgrade Instructions section below, for more information.
- In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
- It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Details
Download and Disc Creation Instructions
- Download the UPDATA_M04R789M.zip to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
- Double-click on UPDATA_M04R789M.ZIP to extract the file.
- The extracted file will be named UPDATA_M04R789.ISO
a. Right-click the UPDATA_M04R789.ISO file and in the menu select Get Info.
b. On the UPDATA_M04R789.ISO information screen verify that the size listed is 52.6 MB (55,201,792 bytes).
c. Close the Get Info screen. - Create a firmware upgrade disc.

CD Burning Notes:
- IMPORTANT: At this time, not all versions of CD burning software are able to create an upgrade disc. If you have difficulty creating a disc, please consider requesting a disc.
- The upgrade disc must be finalized. Be sure to select Finalize CD (No further writing possible) in your CD burning software to finalize the upgrade disc.
- If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new upgrade disc.
- Burning the disc using packet writing software is not supported.
Do not use an upgrade disc created using any other process than the one described above.
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware upgrade using a disc.
Firmware Upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Do not power off the player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process takes a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
- Place the upgrade disc in the player, and close the disc tray.
- After the disc is loaded, the message, Perform version update? is displayed on the television.
- Use the remote control to select OK, and then press the ENTER button.
- The upgrade process starts and VUP appears on the player front panel display.
- While the upgrade is installed the message VUP */9 is displayed on the player front display.
Note: The * changes to 0 through 9, indicating the upgrade progress. - The firmware upgrade is complete when FINISH appears on the player front panel display.
WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your player being unresponsive and requiring repair. - Remove the upgrade disc from the player.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
- Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 789, the firmware upgrade was successful.
If The Upgrade Disc Does Not Eject
If the upgrade disc does not eject even though FINISH is displayed, please follow the steps below.
- Power off the Blu-ray Disc player, and disconnect the AC power cord.
- Reconnect the AC power cord while simultaneously holding down the Open/Close button on the player.
Note: Pressing the Open/Close button on the remote control does not work. It is necessary to press Open/Close button on the Blu-ray Disc player. - Keep pressing the Open/Close button until the disc tray opens.
- Remove the disc.
Disc Firmware Upgrade FAQ
- SYS ERR or VUP NG is displayed on the player front panel display.
Please perform the following procedure:
1. Push and hold the POWER button on the player for several seconds until the player powers off.
2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
3. Follow the Disc Upgrade Instructions again.
If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony. - VUP is not displayed on the player front panel display when the upgrade disc is inserted.
Remove the upgrade disc from the player and delete the upgrade files from your computer.
Follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc and then follow the steps in the Disc Upgrade Instructions section to install the firmware upgrade. - The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
Power on the Blu-ray Disc player, and then follow the Disc Upgrade Instructions again. - The UPDATA_M04R789M.zip upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site cannot be extracted.
The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc. - The firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
