What are the differences in the recovering methods of the Recovery CD-ROM?
"Recovery CD-ROMs" of VAIO computers are roughly divided into three types based on how the system recovery is done.
"Recovery CD-ROM", which is supplied with all VAIO computers, is for restoring the software installed in the factory to its initial state. Generally, there are 3 types of recovering methods for the "Recovery CD-ROMs" of VAIO computers now available now in Japan (as of May 2000).
# "Recovery CD-ROM" with the conventional method
- Applicable model
VAIO computers released by March 2000 (except Windows 2000 pre-installed models)
- Method / Feature
The compressed data is decompressed into files and then copied to the hard disk drive.
* As the data is copied in units of files, copying can be done without formatting.
* It is not possible to install only OS with "Recovery CD-ROM".
* Installation by application is possible only when the installer of an application exists in the [VAIO] folder.
- Selectable items on the recovery window (* except some models)
1. Full Restore Without Format?c
2. Full Restore With Format?c
3. Change Partition Size?c
4. Recovery to original shipped state?c
5. Exit Recovery CD?c
- When you select [1. Full Restore Without Format?c], all files are not overwritten and so the occurrance of problems (of registries, for example) may still exist in some cases. [4. Recovery to original shipped state?c] is hence recommended.

VAIO computers released in and after March 2000 (including Windows 2000 pre-installed models)
- Method / Feature

* The conventional [Full Restore Without Format?c] is not available.
* Installation by application is possible only when the installer of an application exists in the [VAIO] folder. (same as the previous install CD)
