Check the Current Firmware Version
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
- Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
- If the system starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
- Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
- Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
- The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System will be listed on the television screen.
If the last four digits of the version number are 0510 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.
How To Get the Firmware upgrade
There are two ways to obtain the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System firmware upgrade:
Network upgrade:
- The Network upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network upgrade method.
- You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
- Please see the Network upgrade Instructions section, for more information.
Create an upgrade Disc:
- If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
- Please see the Download the Firmware and Create an upgrade Disc section, for more information.
Network Upgrade Instructions
The Network upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network upgrade method to upgrade the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System firmware.
Important Notes:
- If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
- WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
Note: If you cannot connect the system to your Internet source, please see the How To Get the Firmware upgrade section above for information about firmware upgrade disc options. - In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
- It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
Firmware upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
- Connect the "LAN(100)" terminal on the system to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
- If there is a disc in the system, please remove the disc.
- Press the “FUNCTION” button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
IMPORTANT: The upgrade cannot be performed unless the system is set to "BD/DVD" function. - At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Quick Start Mode" and make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off".
Note: If the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "On", change the setting to "Off". Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed. - Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Network update" and then press the ENTER button.
- The message "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
- Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
- The upgrade starts and "UPDATING" appears on the front panel display.
- While the upgrade is installed, the message " UPDATING " is displayed on the front panel display.
- The firmware upgrade is complete when "COMPLETE" appears on the front panel display.
WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair. - The Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System will automatically power off.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
- Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0510, the firmware upgrade was successful.

Network Firmware upgrade FAQ
- "UPDATE" and "ERROR" are displayed alternately on the front panel display, and "Update failed" is displayed on the TV screen.
Please perform the following procedure:- Check the following items.
- Check that the router and all devices connected between the system and the router are switched on.
- Check that all the cables between the system and the router are correctly connected.
- Verify that you are using the correct type of cable (straight or crossover) between the system and the router. - Using the remote control, select Retry on the display and press Enter.
If you can not perform the network update, try the Disc Upgrade Instructions.

If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony.
- Check the following items.
- When running network upgrade, the television displays the message, "Connection status cannot be confirmed" and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade.
There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.- Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the "LAN(100)" terminal on the unit and to the Internet source.
- Check the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System network settings and confirm that the system has its own IP address.
Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the "Proxy Server" input field. - Follow the Network upgrade Instructions again.
- The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System, and then follow the Network upgrade Instructions again. - After the network upgrade process has started, "1/9" is displayed in the lower right but the progress bar on the display has not changed.
Depending on your network circumstances, the network upgrade process can take a long time (up to 60 minutes).
That is why 1/9 is displayed in the lower right and the progress bar on the display will not change for a long time. - The network upgrade has been going for over 60 minutes and has not finished.
If your system is connected via wireless to the network, please try to connect with a cable to the network and try the procedure again.
If the problem continues, the network transmission speed may be low. In that case please try the Disc Upgrade Instructions.

Details
Download the Firmware and Create an upgrade Disc
If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
Important Notes:
- If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System
- IMPORTANT: At this time, not all versions of CD burning software are able to create an upgrade disc. If you have difficulty creating a disc, please consider using the network upgrade method or requesting a disc. You may also opt to check back later to see if a newer version of the firmware upgrade has become available.
- WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
- Use a brand new CD-R disc to burn the firmware upgrade. The system may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
Note: A CD-R disc is strongly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc. - Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:
Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP is recommended. - A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the upgrade disc.
- In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
- It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
Download and Disc Creation Instructions
- Download the UPDATA_M12R0510.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_M12R0510.zip file is 103,604,526 bytes.
a. Right-click the UPDATA_M12R0510.zip file, and click "Properties".
b. On the " UPDATA_M12R0510.zip Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "98.8 MB (103,604,526 bytes)".
Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
c. If the file size is different than the "103,604,526 bytes", please download the UPDATA_M12R0510.zip file again. - Double-click the UPDATA_M12R0510.zip file. Then, extract the ZIP file.
- The extracted files will be named "MSB12-FW.BIN” and “MSB12-FW.ID”
- To create a firmware upgrade disc, write the decompressed files (2 files) to root of CD-R disc using CD-R writing software. Follow the operating instructions for the writing software to create the disc.
CD Burning Notes:
- IMPORTANT: At this time, not all versions of CD burning software are able to create an upgrade disc.
- In order for the upgrade disc to work, you must create it using the "Data Disc" option of your CD burning software.
- The upgrade disc must be finalized. Be sure to select "Finalize CD (No further writing possible)" in your CD burning software to finalize the upgrade disc.
- If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new upgrade disc.
- Burning the disc using packet writing software is not supported.
- Do not use an upgrade disc created using any other process than the one described above.
Disc upgrade Instructions
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware upgrade using a disc.
Firmware upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process takes a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System
- Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
IMPORTANT: The upgrade cannot be performed unless the system is set to "BD/DVD" function. - At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Quick Start Mode" and make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off".
If the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "On", change the setting to "Off". Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed. - Place the upgrade disc in the system, and close the disc tray.
- After the disc is loaded, the message, "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
- Use the remote control to select "OK", and then press the ENTER button.
- The upgrade process starts and "UPDATING" appears on the panel display.
- While the upgrade is installed the message "UPDATING" is displayed on the front panel display.
- The firmware upgrade is complete when "COMPLETE" appears on the front panel display. Then, the system is turned off automatically.
WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your system being unresponsive and requiring repair. - Power on the system and remove the upgrade disc from the system.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.
- Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0510, the firmware upgrade was successful.
Check the Current Firmware Version
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
- Power on the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System and press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
- If the system starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
- Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Quick Start Mode" and make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off".
If the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "On", change the setting to "Off". Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed. - Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
- The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System will be listed on the television screen.
If the last four digits of the version number are 0510, the firmware upgrade was successful.
Disc Firmware upgrade FAQ
- "UPDATE" and "ERROR" is displayed on the front panel display.
Please perform the following procedure:
1. Disconnect the AC cord, then plug the AC cord again.
2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
3. Follow the Disc upgrade Instructions again.
If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony. - "UPDATING" is not displayed on the front panel display when the upgrade disc is inserted.
Remove the upgrade disc from the system and delete the upgrade files from your computer. Follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc and then follow the steps in the Disc upgrade Instructions section to install the firmware upgrade. - The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System, and then follow the Disc upgrade Instructions again. - When I double click on the UPDATA_M12R0510.zip upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site, the "MSB12-FW.BIN” and “MSB12-FW.ID” files are not created.
The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an upgrade Disc section to create a new upgrade disc - The firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
